Peer Mentors

Meet your Peer Mentors. These students are upperclassmen who will help answer questions about life at Ohio State, architecture and landscape architecture studios, and much more. Use them as a resource as you begin your college career. If your mentor hasn't contacted you already, he or she will be in touch with you soon.

Eight States

2009 incoming Architecture Scholars students are from eight states: Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. This year's class has 36 students, 18 males and 18 females.

Scholars T-shirts

Order your 2009-2010 Scholars T-shirt. Shirts are $6.50 each, and the deadline to order is August 1.

Adobe Software Discounts

You might want to purchase a copy of Adobe Design Standard (Creative Suite 4 edition) from Wired Out. This is not required by any means (you'll have free access to this software in the Knowlton Hall computer labs at any time), but you might find it helpful to start learning these programs on your own. You will use these programs frequently as a student in the Knowlton School of Architecture.

Design Standard ($199) includes Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat 9 Pro
Design Premium ($299) includes Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat 9 Pro, as well as Dreamweaver and Flash

In autumn quarter, there will be a weekly Photoshop workshop for Architecture Scholars students. This will be led by one of our upper-level students and will be held on Mondays from 5:30-6:18pm. The workshop will help familiarize you with the basics of Photoshop.

SERVitecture

SERVitecture, a student organization led by undergraduate architecture and landscape architecture students, offers a service-learning trip in early September. This particular trip is geared toward incoming students. This year, the group plans to travel to Charlottesville, Virginia, to work with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In addition to volunteering, participants will have the opportunity to explore local examples of architecture and landscape architecture. The experience is also a great way to meet other incoming students and to get to know a few upperclassmen. More information on the cost of the trip and how to apply will be posted soon.

Earlier this year, SERVitecture was recognized as one of the university's Outstanding Student Organizations.

City & Regional Planning Major

This fall, the Knowlton School of Architecture will launch a new undergraduate major in City and Regional Planning. This program leads to a Bachelor of Science in City and Regional Planning, which is a four-year pre-professional degree. The degree qualifies graduates to sit for certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners after just four years of work as a planner following their bachelor’s degree.

The major is divided into required and elective courses, lecture classes, and service-learning courses. Topics include introduction to the planning profession (year 1); physical planning, design matters, and planning history (year 2); methods of planning inquiry, planning tools, and service-learning (year 3); and individual research and planning projects (year 4).

A minor in City and Regional Planning is also available to students who choose to pursue other majors.

To learn more about the planning profession, visit the American Planning Association.

Fallingwater & Kentuck Knob: October 17

This fall, Architecture Scholars will have the opportunity to visit both Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, both residences are located in western Pennsylvania. The trip will take place on Saturday, October 17 (don't worry—the football game is away). The cost for the trip is $20 and includes transportation, admission/guided tours of both residences, and a boxed lunch. You'll be able to sign up for this trip when school begins in the fall.
