Buying Books

By now I'm sure you're all wondering when and how you should buy books. Don't stress- it's incredibly easy and a majority of the time it's much cheaper not to buy them at the campus bookstore (although, for 200 you may have to- sorry).

For 100, there is no book. However, there are two required books for 200. Both are not available at the campus bookstore (Barnes and Noble/Central Classrooms), but are available at SBX on High Street near East 15th.

Most of your instructors, but not all of them, will usually send out an email a few days prior to the start of class to reiterate what books are required but the above link is generally a safe bet.

Feel free to go ahead and reserve books at Barnes and Noble or any other campus bookstore. A majority of bookstores have both new and used copies, and some even have the option to rent a book. If you do choose to reserve a book, you just simply pick it up at the store after moving in. Just be aware that some books may be cheaper elsewhere. It's not a bad idea to take a few minutes comparing prices at different stores. The following links are bookstores that are recommended:

A mystery no more: The 2011 Study Abroad will be focused in The Netherlands, with travel to Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Firs-year students: Expect a phone call from Arch/Larch 200 Instructor Aimee Moore. In addition to teaching Arch/Larch 200 this fall, Aimee will be co-leading the 2011 study abroad program and its seminar course. She'll be in touch with you soon to share details and answer questions.

These are common questions! If you'd like you can look up and reserve (or rent or buy) your books in advance. Several campus area bookstore offer these services.

You don't have to reserve your books in advance, though it may be convenient to do this your first time around. If you don't reserve books, just take a copy of your schedule with you to any bookstore to find what you need.

Fallingwater + Kentuck Knob Registration

Brandgrens uses light objects and information stations to permanently mark the areas of Rotterdam which were destroyed by the bombing and subsequent fires on May 14, 1940. Nearly all of the city center was destroyed in the 15 minutes of bombing. Incorporating the iconic image of a flame into the light objects creates public awareness of the history and location of the event within the context of the contemporary city. S.R. Crown Hall embodies Mies slogan of 'less is more' and an architectural example of late -Modernism. The vast column-less interior demonstrates the push for an adaptive, free changing, universal space to house the College of Architecture at IIT. Pushing the limits of steel and glass technology of the time, Crown Hall's beautifully detailed structure enables the interior and exterior to purely demonstrate Mies desires for pure expression of construction and materials.

Villa Savoye is the quintessential architectural example of early-Modernism. The house demonstrates Le Corbusier's Five Points of Architecture, considered a base for all architectural design; Piloti, Free Facade, Free Plan, Ribbon Windows and a Roof Garden.

jazzy_fact: the semi-circular base of the house acts as a drive-way, which has been suggested to be based on the exact turning radius of a 1927 Citroen automobile.

Scholars Intramural Committee Seeking involved KSA student

The Sport and Wellness scholars program is seeking a student to be actively involved in a committee to aid in the success of the All-Scholar Intramural Sports League.

'As a member, you would be responsible for no more than 2 meetings a month. At these meetings, we would discuss the sport league in session and how we can improve it and make it a success. Another duty would be to establish contact with your specific scholars program and make sure that you have enough members for a team and to market our All-Star Scholar events, which you will be helping plan. The main goal of this committee is to establish better communication among the scholars groups and the intramural offices so that we can have a smooth and successful intramural experience here at Ohio State.'

Period: Post-Modernism - 'a revival of traditional architectural forms, ornament and language in an effort to more directly engage popular culture and in reaction to the abstraction and Minimalism of Modern Architecture' (Ideas of Order, 356)

In Venturi's house for his mother, historical references of the traditional 'home', such as the gable roof or picture window, are combined with minimalist abstractions of form and space typical to Modernist Architecture. This combination forms elementary design concepts of this Post-Modernist house.

jazzy_fact: the original paint color was a hue of green, a recent trip reveals the house has morphed into a color more suitable to its age, a faint grayish-blue.

All-Scholars Mexico Study Abroad

When: Fall Quarter course with travel December 10-21, 2010
What: As a participant you will enroll in SPAN 510: Mexican Studies during fall quarter for 3 credit hours. This course will focus on ecology, tourism and alternative globalization in southern Mexico and Mayan country.
Where: During the short-term study abroad trip you will travel to the cities of Merida, Campeche, Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. The travel portion of the program will allow you to earn 5 credit hours of SPAN 395.
Who: This program is open to students that are in their 2nd year or higher and are enrolled in one of Ohio State’s Scholars Programs (first preference) as well as students who are in the Honors Program.
Cost: Program fee is $2,799

Portfolio Help!

Not sure where to start with your portfolio? Don't worry, the Arch Scholars Student Leadership Team has a plan to help you get on track. Come to the Scholars Portfolio Workshop on Thursday, May 6 (7:30pm, KN 430). The Leadership Team will help you give you tips on a layout, scanning and photographing your work, and other advice to get you started and on track to a great portfolio.

Bring your copy of the portfolio requirements (download at right), digital files of your work, and your questions. Also, check out lulu.com before the session so that you have some familiarity with the submission guidelines.

The Leadership Team will then offer additional open lab hours for scholars students throughout the rest of the quarter. Attend the May 6th session for details...

Stone Lab Trip with Bio Sci Scholars

You're invited to join the Biological Sciences Scholars students for a trip to Ohio State's Stone Lab at Lake Erie!

The trip is Saturday, May 8th. The cost is $15, and includes the activities at Stone Lab, transportation, the ferry, and lunch. There are some tips and tricks to autumn quarter scheduling, especially if you plan to continue in the architecture or landscape architecture program. Even if you have decided to pursue another major, it's really important that you take the time to talk with me or another advisor to make sure you are on track. Remember, it is your responsibility as a student to take action and make sure you are aware of degree requirements. Plan ahead and take the time to seek out the resources you need before your enrollment time begins.

Summer & Autumn Quarter Scheduling, Part 2

Attention first-year students who plan to apply to the architecture and/or landscape architecture majors...

When you register for autumn quarter, you will not be able to schedule permission-only architecture or landscape architecture courses (Arch 241, 271; Larch 252, 271).

Instead you should plan a full (15 hours+) schedule of alternative courses. What would you take if you (A) are not admitted to the major of your choice or (B) if you decide not to pursue one of these disciplines?

The required architecture and landscape architecture courses will be added to your schedule once you are admitted to one of those majors. Everyone who is admitted is guaranteed a seat in the required major courses.

Why do we ask you to schedule an alternative selection of courses? It will be much, much easier to schedule an alternative selection of courses now than it will be later in the summer.

Summer & Autumn Scheduling, Part 1

Yes, spring quarter has just begun, but it's not too early to think about autumn quarter scheduling. You'll be asked to schedule any summer and autumn quarter courses at the same time.

The registration schedule is as follows. For your specific enrollment appointment (day and time), review the enrollment appointment box in your Student Center. Days/times have not yet been posted, but should be available by the third week of April.

Apr 26-27: University Priority appointments open (Honors)
Apr 28-29: Graduating Seniors' appointments open
Apr 30-May 5: Seniors (Rank 4), Rank R, GRD appointments open
May 6-11: Juniors (Rank 3) appointments open
May 12-17: Sophomores (Rank 2) and CED appointments open
May 18-21: Freshmen (Rank 1) appointments open

First-year students: If you've accumulated more than 45 credit hours by the end of winter quarter, you are considered Rank 2. This includes any AP, PSEO, or IB credits you may have brought with you to Ohio State.

All students: If you've achieved a 3.4 cumulative GPA for the past two quarters, you are eligible to apply for Honors status. Schedule a meeting with Angi to find out details.

goBuckeye for Incoming Students

Incoming Architecture Scholars who plan to visit campus for goBuckeye Day (Friday, April 9) will have an opportunity to visit Baker Hall West for an Architecture Scholars Open House. All Scholars Intramural Coed Softball

New Ohio Union Opens 3/29

Studio Clean-Up

Studio clean-up must be complete by 5pm on Thursday, March 17th

Students are responsible for clearing off DESKS and CREDENZAS TOPS, and removing all items from COMMON STUDIO AREAS (ovals, pin-up walls, studio partitions, etc.) no later than Thursday.

The KSA is not responsible for materials (models, supplies, pin-ups, etc.) disposed of during cleaning.

Items may be left in locked credenzas. Please do not leave valuables in crendenzas over break, however.

Garbage bags will be available throughout the studio area. Leave full garbage bags either in or next to trash cans. Push brooms are located throughout studio area. Studios are inspected on the last day of final exams – negligent students are subject to grade withholding.

Upperclassmen: KSA Scholarships

Architecture Scholars students who are currently enrolled in a KSA major and who plan to return for the 2010-11 academic year are encouraged to apply for a KSA Scholarship.

Pre-majors are not yet eligible for these scholarships as they are distributed on the basis of academic merit/performance for students who have completed core studios and coursework in their particular major.

Sensory Experience Design Competition: Monday, February 8th our projects will be on display and presented from 12:00 to 1:30 in the Main Space, with invited members of the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Projects will be on display throughout the day, you should stop by and check them out! Didn't get your entry in? If you have that moment of inspiration, we will still accept any late comers right up until noon on Monday.

Brookside Charrette: We had a charrette last weekend for conceptual design for the longhouse shelter. Soon we will be proceeding into the next step of finalizing our design. If you are interested in helping with the design development email servitecture@gmail.com.

A representative from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards in Washington, D.C., will be on hand on Febraury 17 to share information about the necessary process of licensure for architects. If your career plans lead you in this direction, it would be wise to attend.

BX Scholarship Opportunity

Consider applying for the Builders Exchange (BX) Scholarship.

Since 1959, the Builders Exchange Scholarship Program has recognized students who represent the future of the central Ohio commercial construction industry. Eligible students must be enrolled in or be entering a two-year technical program or four-year college program and be in a construction-related field of study.

Applicants are evaluated on the following criteria:
• academic achievement
• community and school involvement
• financial need
• relationship of the student’s field of study to the construction industry
• potential future impact of the student on the central Ohio construction community
• quality of the application
